12 MARION
I call up the visuals for Victor with todayâs date. Almost immediately, the system locates him near the Brizo Tunnel that connects the 5th and 6th Parishes. I tap on the video and watch an interaction that occurred just a few minutes ago with three of the Templeâs employees. Stupid ones, at that, because it looks like they let him go.
Iâm seeing him from the vantage point of the Tracer whoâs asking him questions. As always, Vic looks calm and collected, though inside Iâm willing to bet heâs losing his mind.
He knows whatâll happen if anyone finds out where he was today. He knows there wonât be another chance for him if he goes back into the Grind.
âIâm Puissant,â he tells the Tracer. He looks her right in the eye with the kind of confidence that can only come from a man whoâs gone off his injections. But sheâs not experienced enough to pick up on it. I havenât yet built a sensor to read cockiness levels.
If I were any crazier, Iâd say heâs looking right at me as heâs speaking. Well of course he is. He knows me; he knows how I work. He left that silver ring behind on purpose. Heâs been watching me this whole time. He probably even knows that right now, Iâm sitting here, staring at him.
What he doesnât know is how Iâll react. What Iâll do. He doesnât know how loyal I am to the Temple. He doesnât know that Iâm not likely to put my life on the line to protect him. If heâs counting on me to cross over to the Incitersâ side, heâs not as smart as Iâve always thought.
From the looks on the other two Tracersâ faces, theyâre a little skeptical of his story, and I canât say I blame them. Puissants are few and far between, especially nowadays. They may as well have stumbled upon a unicorn in the middle of that alley.
Vic tells them heâs on leave, and after theyâve checked out his code to make sure heâs not messing with them, theyâre satisfied. Idiots didnât even look to see if he had an updated file, or if thereâs anything sketchy about the intel they do have. They just take the manâs word for it.
To be fair, they donât know Vic like I do. They donât know his tells. But I know them. Like the fact that he grinds his jaw when he lies. Iâve seen him do it more than a few times. Itâs his survival mechanism kicking in. His walls going up. A self-defense tactic that usually means the other person is about to get hurt.
I still remember the last time I watched that jaw of his clench in a bold-faced lie. âIâll be right back,â he told me. âDonât worry. Iâve got this. Iâm looking after it, and everythingâs gonna be fine.â
I never saw him again. Not until the footage from Persephoneâs. And even that was just me seeing him through the lens of a camera.
